An Indian woman was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a little boy, only to abandon him the same day after discovering he belonged to a different religion.

On Nov. 7, the boy's mother, Ruksana, reported her 4-year-old missing after stepping away briefly, the Hindustan Times reported.

"She said that around 10:30 a.m., she had gone to use the public toilet and on returning, her son was missing," a police officer told the outlet.

Authorities quickly opened an investigation, reviewing more than 400 CCTV clips to try and identify the suspect. The following day, the boy was found in a shelter after reportedly being abandoned hours after he was taken.

On Nov. 12, Rachna Devi, 46, was arrested at her home in east Delhi's Krishna Nagar neighborhood. During questioning, Devi allegedly confessed to taking the boy after longing for a son, but left him after discovering their religions were different.

The child has since been reunited with his mother following counseling and a medical examination.

Authorities are still investigating the case, with the suspect potentially facing legal action under kidnapping charges.
