New Orleans police say that 10 inmates who escaped jail had help from someone on the inside.
Sterling Williams, a 33, a maintenance worker at the Orleans Parish Justice Center, now faces criminal charges related to the escape, ABC News reported.
Authorities say that Williams shut off the water to a toilet, which made it easier for the inmates to rip it off its hinges. The 10 inmates included four individuals who were serving time on second-degree murder charges, ABC News reported.
Williams has been charged with 10 counts of principal to simple escape and one count of malfeasance in office. Three other jail employees have been suspended in the aftermath of the escape, ABC News reported.
"Williams admitted to agents that one of the escapees advised him to turn the water off in the cell where the inmates escaped from," Lousiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said according to Fox News. "Instead of reporting the inmate, Williams turned the water off as directed allowing the inmates to carry out their scheme to successfully escape."
So far, four of the ten escaped inmates have been captured. Still on the loose are Corey Boyd, Jermaine Donald, Derrick Groves, Antoine Massey, Leo Tate and Lenton Vanburen, CNN reported.
"We cannot give additional details as to the supposed whereabouts of the remaining fugitives but we can say that we will follow any investigative leads no matter where they take us," Lt. Mindi MacHauer Keith with the Louisiana State Police told CNN.
